In recent years, solar photovoltaic power generation, as a key component of clean energy, has experienced rapid global growth. According to statistics, global installed photovoltaic capacity exceeded 1 TW in 2022. As previously installed photovoltaic modules gradually reach the end of their lifespan, it is estimated that approximately 8 million tons of used photovoltaic panels will be generated globally by 2030. If these discarded modules are not properly handled, they will not only occupy significant land resources but also contain heavy metals such as lead and cadmium, which may cause long-term damage to the ecological environment.

Recycling Value of Used Photovoltaic Panels
Photovoltaic panels contain up to 95% recyclable materials, including high-purity glass, aluminum frames, silicon wafers, and precious metals such as silver and copper. Through professional recycling, approximately 650 kg of glass, 100 kg of aluminum, and 20 kg of silicon can be extracted from each ton of used photovoltaic panels. These recycled materials can be directly used in the manufacture of new modules, achieving a closed-loop resource utilization process. Furthermore, recycling effectively prevents the leakage of toxic substances and reduces carbon emissions throughout the photovoltaic industry's life cycle, offering significant environmental benefits.
Complete Recycling Process
Modern photovoltaic panel recycling lines utilize an automated process: first, the aluminum frame and junction box are removed through mechanical disassembly; then, the EVA film is decomposed using thermal or chemical methods; glass, silicon powder, and metals are separated through physical methods such as crushing and screening; and finally, silicon and precious metals are purified using hydrometallurgical techniques. The entire process achieves a material recovery rate of over 95%, and the waste gas and wastewater generated during the process are rigorously purified to ensure compliance with environmental standards.
Economic Value and Development Prospects
From an economic perspective, the photovoltaic panel recycling industry offers considerable profit potential. For example, a recycling line with a processing capacity of 50MW/year could generate annual revenue of tens of millions of yuan. As countries continue to implement extended producer responsibility systems, photovoltaic manufacturers are actively developing recycling businesses. The global photovoltaic recycling market is expected to exceed US$15 billion by 2030. In the future, with the continuous advancement of recycling technology and the emergence of economies of scale, photovoltaic panel recycling will become an indispensable link in the green energy industry chain, providing important support for the global goal of carbon neutrality.
